Steps to Take if a Filling Comes Loose

Posted on 1/30/2019 by Dr. Leary
Steps to Take if a Filling Comes LooseNo filling lasts forever, so if you find yourself with one that came loose or fell out, don't panic! Here are three simple guidelines you should follow, for your own safety and to protect your mouth from further damages and risks.

Finish Removing the Filling (If Possible)

To avoid the risk of any shards damaging your mouth, getting caught between teeth, or accidentally traveling to the stomach or lungs, be sure to gently remove all disconnected pieces from your mouth. If there is one singular piece, you may want to save it for your visit and see if we can clean it and return it to where it belongs.

Call Us
We will be happy to help you set up our next soonest appointment to see about refilling the tooth. These things do happen, and we know how nerve-wracking it can be, so knowing you are prepared as best as can be will help set your mind at ease. Plus, if there are any details unique to your situation, we need to discuss those with you and tailor treatment to your needs.

Keep the Site Safe
This means to avoid eating harmful foods (spicy, sour, hot, crunchy, etc.) and practice routine hygienic care of your teeth, with routine brushing, flossing, and rinsing, as best as possible. You want to keep from further damaging or risking illness on the affected tooth, so treat it carefully until you are seen by us.

Follow these steps, and once you are in our office, we will be happy to guide you through any additional steps that may be necessary, depending on your care needs. If you are already on step 2 of this article, please give us a call and we will happily set that appointment up for you! We look forward to hearing from you!
