You Need to Fix Broken Teeth As Soon As They Happen

You Need to Fix Broken Teeth As Soon As They HappenHave you ever bitten down into something chewy and soft only to feel a crunchy, hard sensation instead? That sinking feeling may lead to the discovery of a broken tooth, but you may not know what to do now. If you break a tooth, you should be sure to visit our office as soon as possible for treatment.

Assess the Situation
First, assess your tooth to see the extent of the damage. If your tooth is simply chipped, you might not need to see us right away, especially if it doesn't hurt. You should still take care to not chip it further, but this often won't constitute a dental emergency. Just be sure to see us soon.

Emergency Dental Treatment

If your tooth is fractured or cracked, it is a serious issue and would warrant a dental emergency. This type of break suggests that damage has occurred both on the inside and the outside of the tooth, and emergency treatment is needed to save the tooth. Follow these steps in such situations:

•  Call our office for an emergency appointment, making sure to tell us that you've cracked or broken a tooth.
•  Rinse out your mouth with warm water to clean it.
•  If facial trauma is the cause of your fractured tooth, place a cold compress to the area to reduce swelling
•  Take Tylenol to alleviate pain and discomfort, but never apply the painkiller directly to the gum or tooth.

When you get to our office, we'll likely need X-rays to determine the extent of the damage. If the tooth pulp has been compromised, you might need a root canal. If the pulp isn't damaged at all, a simple crown may do the trick.

If you feel you've broken a tooth, don't delay calling our office. We'll treat your broken tooth and get you feeling better in no time.
